WORST TRADE IN RED SOX HISTORY

I thought Dan Duquette was gone. Guess not. In the worst Red Sox move since selling Babe Ruth, the Red Sox sent All-Star slugger Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers, several sources have reported.

The Globe is all over the story. So's ESPN.com.

From what I've gathered, here's how the deal breaks down:

Red Sox get:
Jason Bay, left fielder for the Pirates. Bay has a career .281 batting average in four-plus seasons. He has 140 career homers. He has been an All-Star twice. He was also National League Rookie of the Year in 2004.

Dodgers get:
Manny Ramirez, left fielder for the Red Sox. Ramirez is a career .312 hitter in 14-plus seasons. He has 510 home runs, 1,672 RBIs and career OBP of .409. He has been an All-Star 12 times. He was the 2004 World Series MVP.

Pirates get:
Andy LaRoche, 24, Dodgers third baseman of the future (not anymore)

Dodgers' Double-A pitcher Bryan Morris

Red Sox outfield prospect Brandon Moss and former "Closer of the Future" Craig Hansen

Jeff's take:
I've always said that the Pirates do not have a player good enough on their roster to play for the Red Sox. I stand by that statement today. Jason Bay is an above-average hitter and a terrible outfielder. He may be a quieter player off the field and in the clubhouse, but his on-field abilities pale in comparison to Hall-of-Fame bound Manny Ramirez.

This is an awful trade. Not only did the Red Sox give up their best player, but they also gave up two of their best prospects in the process.

And this is the biggest problem I have with it: Why in the world would the Sox give up two more prospects in addition to Ramirez in this trade? If anything, the Sox should be receiving two more players.

This has to be one of the worst trades in baseball history. Jason Bay has no playoff experience. He also is not fit to bat anywhere in the middle of the Red Sox order. He will have to hit sixth or seventh. And for a guy who does not bring anything more to fielding than the grass that he stands on, I really don't see any value in this trade.

It's clear to me that Red Sox management solely wanted to get rid of Manny Ramirez. This was not the way to go about doing that.

Awful, awful trade.
